"Rainbow Shelter" by Yu-Ming Zhu

About the Artist

Yu-Ming Zhu is a very passionate and well-known artist in the Greater Seattle area. He participated in the “Five Thoughts of Asian Art” program that was offered through the Seattle Art Museum and KCTS Channel 9. He continues teaching sumi painting and calligraphy at Seattle and Bellevue Community Colleges.

 

 

 

Workshop Details:

“Eternity in Brush Strokes” Two-day Workshop

March 16 (Friday)

Day One: From 9:30 to 3:30 (one hour lunch break)

09:30 – 09:45 Critic/suggestion for the new day,
Group Tai Chi exercise.
09:45 – 10:15 New Year flower – Plum Blossom
10:15 – 11:15 Students paint (individual instruction),
11:15 – 12:00 Group critic. Dot, line, surface (wash) composition, how to treat negative space as part of composition

12:00 – 1:00 Lunch break

1:00 – 1:45 Calligraphy demo, followed by students practice
1:45 –2:15 Dome on Yuming’s personal preferable expressional style. We will paint Wistaria.
2:15 – 3:15 Individual instruction
Student paint
3:15 – 3:30 Critique and meditative Tai Chi movement.

Students are encouraged to bring pictures or the real objects we are painting.

March 17 (Saturday)

Day Two: From 09:30 –3:30 (One hour lunch break)

09:30 – 09:45 Questions and Answers
09:45 – 10:00 Warm up movement
10:00 – 10:15 Group exercise on practice of abstract and bamboo stokes. (suggest large movement, whole piece of paper.)
10:15 – 10:45 Demo on Chrysanthemum
10:45 – 11:45 Students paint and Individual instruction
11:45 – 12:00 Critique

12:00 – 1:00 Lunch break

1:00 – 1:15 Discussion on Style, personality in paintings, multi-media and Sumi, tech v/s idea
1:15 – 2:45 Demo on painting Egret or live flowers brought by students.
2:45 – 3:30 Students will complete a master piece.

Bring your materials.
Make sure you have combination brushes, a wolf hair and Rat Tail, and Mountain Horse, Hake brush and one large calligraphy brush. Ample and variety of rice papers. Paper Weight, brush washer, colors and porcelain palette and etc.
