Drawing & Painting

Zoom class
At the heart of a successful painting is a good drawing. Together we’ll explore different drawing and painting concepts such as value, composition, temperature and color theory. Whether your preferred medium is graphite, charcoal, gouache, oil or acrylic, we’ll touch on it all while tackling different subjects including portraits, landscapes and still lifes. Concepts will be illustrated through discussion and examples from art history and current working artists. Each month will wrap up with group critiques. Demonstrations, links to videos and other resources will also be provided. Join us on zoom or watch the recordings! Students will have access to recordings of each session for the month.
The vast majority of concepts we will discuss will be relevant to nearly all traditional drawing and painting mediums. Certain sessions may focus, in depth, on specific mediums and techniques based on the interests of the group. I tend to work in oils, gouache, graphite and watercolor but I encourage acrylic, pastels, ink and any other mediums you’d like to explore. Tools, substrates and mediums will be discussed as we progress through the class.
Below is a list of colors that I currently have on my palette: titanium white, cerulean blue (hue), ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, naphthol red, yellow ochre, hansa yellow medium, phthalo turquoise
Here’s a list of basic drawing supplies that I always have on me: medium size drawing pad (ideally bristol), drawing board, graphite pencils- a range of H and B, compressed charcoal (soft), vine charcoal (soft), fixative, vinyl eraser, kneaded eraser, sharpener
This June:
We’ll look at landscape painting through the centuries. I’ll share techniques and concepts that should help you enhance your own landscape painting, whether you paint “en plein air” or from your studio.
This is a zoom, discussion-based class. We will look at art history examples, I will provide demonstrations and we will go over students’ work. Join us!
