Mixed Media 101:

Curious about mixed media but not quite sure how all the materials work together? This workshop is all about exploring and building your own visual language.

We’ll work with a generous mix of artist materials; including fluid acrylics, watercolor, pencils, pastels, crayons, inks, and more; learning what each material can do and how to layer them successfully.

Rather than focusing on one finished piece, we’ll create a visual library of colors, marks, textures, shapes, and combinations you can return to in your own art practice.

We’ll explore:

• How different mixed media materials behave
• Layering: what works over what
• Transparency, opacity, texture, and line
• Color combinations and personal palettes
• Expressive mark-making
• How to loosen up and experiment without worrying about the finished product

Perfect for beginners or anyone wanting to bring more play and experimentation into their work.

Take everything we explored in Mixed Media 101 and bring it onto canvas.

In this three-hour workshop, we’ll work on a variety of substrates including stretched canvas and approach abstract work through layers of color, shape, line, texture, and expressive marks.

We’ll talk about how to begin without a rigid plan, how to respond to what is happening on the canvas (And, how to keep going when you reach that awkward “what now?” stage of a painting.)

Using fluid acrylics, pencils, pastels, crayons, and other mixed media, we’ll explore ways to create depth and movement while still leaving room for spontaneity.
